Difference between online Gas Chromatography(GC) and Tunable Filter Spectroscopy(TFS)

In this topic we will discuss about few difference between online Gas Chromatography(GC) and Tunable Filter Spectroscopy(TFS). Online GC will always be a precious gem in analytical field, though we cannot compare GC and TFS because typically GC is widely used in numerous applications and able to measure several components. Gas Chromatography Commonly used in many LAB analyses also but we will not discuss that in topic.

Here we will review few difference between GC and TFS which I came to notice, and this difference table is as per my perspective. If any points are misleading or inappropriate, kindly let me know to correct those points.

Online Gas Chromatography (GC)

Tunable Filter Spectroscopy (TFS)

1

Some of pioneer in online GC manufacturing:

Siemens, ABB, Rosemount and yokogawa

Some of foremost in TFS analyzer manufacturing:

MKS Instruments, Servomex and Envent

2

Extremely significant analyzer in operation for decades.

New operation principle introduced few years back

3

GC has separate detectors for measuring components.

Most common detectors are

        Thermal conductivity detector (TCD)

        Flame ionization detector (FID)

        Flame photometry detector (FPD)

        Helium ionization detector (HID)

        Photo ionization detector (PID)

        Electron capture detector (ECD)

and few more detectors are used depending upon composition of sample as required.

single-element photo-detector is the detector, used for measuring ppm to percent level concentration monitoring of multiple gas compounds.

4

Gas chromatography can be used to separate and

quantify the components of almost all homogenous gaseous or liquid mixtures. It must be possible to vaporize the liquid components

without decomposition

GC can able to measure many components by its separation method and it has wide range of detectors.

TFS is limited in measuring components like

From C1 to C6+

H2S

CO2

High Heating Value (HHV)

Low Heating Value (LHV)

Specific Gravity

Wobbe Index (WI)

5

The gas chromatograph can be used for monitoring and quality control in the following industries and applications.

·         Chemical industry

·         Oil & gas

·         Water/waste water

·         Power engineering

·         Automotive industry

·         Iron and steel

·         Air plant

·         Environmental monitoring

·         Pharmaceuticals

Limited covering area of application like:

·         Hydrocarbon gas composition monitoring

·         Petrochemical process monitoring

·         Specialty and chemical gas process and blending monitoring

·         Catalysis and combustion process monitoring

·         Heating value & Wobbe measurement

·         Power generation (turbine, IC engine, fuel cell)

·         Alternative fuels (biogas, syngas)

6

Response time is very high might take several minutes for analysis

Analysis in seconds

Real-time and  continuous measurement

7

Consume yearly lot Carrier gas and combustion gas for FID/FPD

No need gas cylinder for carrier or combustion purpose

8

Calibration and validation required experienced knowledge and takes several minutes for calibration

Calibration and validation is stress-free.

Nitrogen is use for zero calibration and

Intended standard gas cylinder is span calibration or validation

9

Maintenance of Gas Chromatography is quiet complicated as GC has many serviceable parts like as injection valve, column, detectors, Printed circuit board and more.

Maintenance of TFS analyzer is easy as it does not have many serviceable parts. TFS has limited serviceable parts like lamp source , chopper motor , pressure , temperature sensor  , Printed circuit board and more.

10

Highly reliable analyzer can able to measure trace even parts-per-billion levels (PPB)  to percentage (depends on the detector )

Can able to measure high range only

11

Few GC required daily attention

Daily attention  is not much required

12

EXTERNAL DIMENSIONS of most of the GC are sizeable

EXTERNAL DIMENSIONS of most of the TFS Analyzer are compact
